Gogagah | MiM 2024 Commences, DLSU-M Team Takes Win | The search for the next top debating team of 2024 commenced with rigorous preparations by the Junior Philippine Economics Society. Teams from various Economics organizations across the Philippines eagerly participated in the screening process, all aiming for the coveted top prize and recognition of their skills.
On February 12th, the elimination battles began, featuring the top eight teams from economics organizations all over the Philippines. The randomized matchups included MSU GenSan Econquistador versus UST Ecosoc Team A, DLSU-M Ekon-Know-Mists versus Silliman’s SES Initiative, UPLB All-Star Applied Economists versus JPES-USLS’s GDPrincesses, and MSU Marawi Rawaten versus USC Trapa’s Angelz. Only four teams advanced for the semifinals.
UST Ecosoc Team A and DLSU-M’s Ekon-Know-Mists faced off in the following round, with the latter unanimously securing a spot in the finals. Meanwhile, USC Trapa’s Angelz emerged victorious against UPLB All-Star Applied Economists, earning their place in the grand finals held the next day.
In the showdown between Trapa’s Angelz and Ekon-Know-Mists, both teams brought their best to the podium. The finals debate centered on decongesting the basic education system via the MATATAG curriculum.
The government, represented by the Ekon-Know-Mists, advocated for DepEd’s initiative to transition to a streamlined K-10 curriculum, emphasizing enhanced numeracy, literacy, and global competitiveness. On the opposing side, represented by Trapa’s Angelz, concerns were raised about the premature nature and costliness of the proposed transition. They emphasized addressing inconsistencies in the current system and investing in teacher development and student support programs instead.
After intense exchanges, the event concluded with DLSU-M’s Ekon-Know-Mists emerging victorious, securing their place in debating history. The decision, reached unanimously by esteemed adjudicators Mx. Akeem Fabila, Mx. Lourenella De Leon, and Mx. Arjay Mercado, affirmed the outstanding performance of the winning team amidst formidable competition.
